| | Threat-Jay-Z-The Black Album | ] | you know you've seen a monumental show when you FORGET that lou reed and laurie anderson played together.
curious email appeared in my inbox from j. regarding a new orleans benefit at the central park summerstage tonight. dr. john, allen toussaint, dar williams, soulive, vernon reid, cassandra wilson, lou reed and laurie anderson, along with several others. i was going to stay in, but as i left work early, the show became more and more appealing. i made it just before the first band started at 1730. to my surprise, the place was virtually empty. things didn't start to pick until j. mascis walked up and played to scorching acoustic tracks. u. made it just in time to catch his set.
and then things get crazy: lou reed walks on with his band with laurie anderson off to the side. by now, the place was packed. i heard more than one person say "i've come to see my hero play." very entertaining set that featured a very animated drummer who ran back and forth between set, percussion and vocals. reed had a silver-sparkled telecaster, but i bet he's jealous he didn't have a paisley one. hah.
the band that featured. dr. john and allen toussaint came out next, and the place went nuts. dr. john on guitar (!!), and toussiant laying some beautiful piano work. soul singer betty lavette (from muskegon, mi, no less) came out and sang one of the most touching versions of "st. james infirmary" i've ever heard. blues guitarist hubert sumin and singer cassandra wilson then joined in and were excellent. on the last inermission, dar williams came on. "i've lost my capo," she announced. "so i'm going to do some really husky-voiced versions of some of my stuff." i almost died when i saw vernon reid looking in from the side, but mistook his gear for that of soulive, who weren't very impressive (why they played after dr. john and toussaint is a mystery). of course the best part of their set was when vernon reid, corey glover (wearing a "loot or die" t-shirt) and angelique kidjo jumped in to sing "voodoo chile." by then, u. and i had had enough and escaped to my place. just as u. left, he said to me, "do you realize we just saw dr. john and allen toussaint together?"
it still hasn't quite hit me. |

ok...friends-only is looking really good right about now. i'm still a little paranoid about my possible discovery by the "wrong people." and after reading a series of plaigiarized blog entries, i'm about ready to go deeper underground. this should happen within the next few days (time permitting). people on my friends list will automatically go on. any LJ-ers not on the friends list who want in can do so by dropping me a line. anyone else who hasn't already requested addition (or isn't an LJ-er) can email me while i work a solution.
in the meanwhile, one last note before i pass out for the night:
my disappointment from friday was quickly erased when we connected. no, not her; this was someone i hadn't spoken to in an even longer time. there's something nice about this rediscovery. none of the pressures or bullshit pretentiousness that clouded our interactions last time. most importantly, the gladness of finding each other seems more genuine than i could've imagined. one might say that if we meet again- i think we will- i might be able to face her without any of my masks. how refreshing. how ironic!
...to be continued. |
